Dry trimming occurs after cannabis plants have been hung and allowed to dry for 4-10 days. There are many factors that affect how long plants need to hang to reach the desired level of dryness. Factors such as the environment they are hanging in, the size of the plants, the climate where the plants reside, and even the current weather conditions affect how many days the plants will need to hang to become dry enough to start trimming.
Automated trimmers have turned the undesirable job of trimming into a less tedious and time consuming task. However, if cannabis plants have not reached the appropriate level of dryness automated trimmers are not able to reach maximum efficiency.
ENVIRONMENT: Low humidity spaces and cool rooms are the ideal environment to operate the machine.
Use these simple tests to evaluate your dry trimming product prior to processing:
1. Bend Stem…. Snap sound? Ideal moisture. No snap sound? Too moist. Run your finger from the top of the bud to the bottom……leaves pop off with no resistance? Ideal dryness. Leaves hang on to the bud? Not dry enough.
2. Squeeze a bud between your fingers, lightly. Crumbles? Too dry. Bounces back? Ideal dryness. Stays squeezed? Too moist.
3. If using a moisture meter (and we highly recommend it)*, the flower should read a 7-8 and the leaves a 5-6. This is the “Sweet Spot”. (Meaning you are retaining optimum moisture inside the bud but the outside leaves are dry.)
*Moisture meter info:
We carry the moisture meter from Triminator here at The Trim Shop. You can pick one up when you come in the store or order from our website.
We have also found a regular wood meter to be quite reliable and perfect for testing your product to see if it is ready for dry trimming. We recommend the meter made by “General” – MMD4E is the model. This meter is available at Amazon and Lowe’s.
Prepping your product:
1. Remove water/fan leaves prior to drying (to allow air flow to properly dry sugar leaf). 2. Hanging to dry keeps your flowers in the best form for dry trimming. Recommend hanging of branches rather than whole plant for proper air flow. (Laying buds out to dry tends to press the leaves against the bud, making them harder to remove)
3. Remove flowers from the stems, just as you would for hand trimming. Cut stem close to flower as possible for best results.
Once you begin the dry trimming process if you find your cannabis is not trimming very well or it is smearing all over the inside of the trimmer you can be confident your product is too wet.
